What Happened to a Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?
What happened to a dream deferred? When I think about the recent change in our society, my mind is blown. The dream that I once thought had died has now been made into a reality. We the people, elected the first Black president!!! As a result, the bar for the unexpected and impossible has been raised. I used to wonder if dreaming was a waste of time or was it powerful seed that would paramount into something greater.
The recent election is proof enough for me that a dream is something greater.
Isn't it amazing how a thought can become a dream, and a dream can turn out to be a great reality? I remember growing up and dreaming of being a motivational speaker that would go around the world and empower people. I could count on all my fingers and toes the times people told me, I was wasting my time on my dream. And to be honest, there were times when I thought I was crazy for thinking I could be anything different.
But the words my 9th grade teacher, Maria Elena Wakamastu spoke. She told me, " I see GREATNESS in you, just believe in your dreams and it will happen for you!!!" Her words lifted my heart and made me realize there was power of dreaming. Look at me now, my dreams are becoming more than a reality but a lifestyle.
Wherever I go, I empower people and let them know there is power in their dreams, they just have to dream and believe.
I know some people think there is an alternative motive behind my words, but I remember when I didn't have hope because everything in my life seemed to be dying- friends, family members, dreams, life and more importantly my hope. The only things that remains were the words my teacher spoke to me " I see GREATNESS in you, just believe in your dreams and it will happen for you!!!"
Don’t tell me there isn’t power in words or dreams. I hope this post as well the recent mandate of change in our community helps empowers you to believe and to dream.
Always Ms Ladee
